Local Podcast Hosts Outdoor Poetry Reading
New YorkCommunity
(VESTAL, N.Y) The Binghamton Poetry Project along with Plugged In Podcast put together a special poetry reading called “Black Voices Matter”. Black Voices Matter, which took place July 18th at the Vestal Museum, was initiated to honor the voices of black poets in the community.
About six poets spoke along with a musical performance and even a meditation session. Organizers of the event stressed that they wanted the voices of black poets to be heard, considering the current climate of the country. Topics of the poems ranged from the weight of oppression to sexual assault.
Aside from poetry and performances, the event also included artists with artwork for sale and donation jars for local organizations fighting for change. The museum says they were able to raise over three hundred dollars for the “Justice and Unity for the Southern Tier” organization. Community members say they were profoundly moved by the poems read and hope to see more events like this in the future.
