Mayor’s Police and Community Coalition to hold 11th Youth Forum Friday

(TULSA, Okla.) The Mayor’s Police and Community Coalition (“MPACC”), in collaboration with Tulsa Public Schools (“TPS”), will host its eleventh Youth Forum on Friday, November 6, 2020, broadcast from the Selman Room at the Charles C. Mason Education Service Center, 3027 South New Haven, in Tulsa. This year’s Youth Forum features a virtual experience with live streaming.
MPACC is a diverse advisory committee that addresses issues affecting police/community relations and helps develop recommendations & best practices designed to enhance trust. MPACC members include Mayor G.T. Bynum and Police Chief Chuck Jordan. Hannibal B. Johnson, author, attorney & consultant, facilitates MPACC.
The MPACC Youth Forum will be attended by delegations of teens and their chaperons from all TPS high schools and a host of Tulsa Police Department officers. Well over 100 teens and adults are expected.
The Youth Forum is designed to familiarize students with:
Law enforcement officers as “real people”;
Reasons for police stops;
Appropriate & inappropriate behavior during police stops;
Avoiding gang involvement;
Information on community policing;
Principles of student responsibility & accountability for behaviors that may result in police contact; and
Ideas on how to help create schools and communities that are safe and secure.

POST-FORUM ASSIGNMENT: Students from each high school should meet with their respective high school police and security officers within the next three weeks to discuss “next steps.”
“Next steps” might include inviting a speaker, hosting a forum in your school, or any other activity or event that will help foster positive relations between students and law enforcement officers.
