Annual Urban League giveaway highlights need amidst pandemic

(BROOME COUNTY, N.Y.) The Broome County Urban League hosted its annual Thanksgiving giveaway this week. The giveaway included a total of 26 turkeys and over 70 prepared meals. There were absolutely no requirements needed; all you had to do was show up to go home with your holiday turkey.
Organizers said this year’s giveaway was notably different than years' prior. With the global pandemic strengthening, there was a greater need this year. A lot of families have fallen on hard times. All 70 meals and 26 turkeys were gone in under 30 minutes.
“We were unpleasantly surprised!” BCUL member Damien Cornwell said. “It was an indication of how urgent the need for food is in our community this holiday season."
The Urban League told VNN they pride themselves on being actively present for the members of their community no matter race, color, or creed. Amongst holiday giveaways, BCUL keeps themselves busy all year round with their number of different programs.
“The main mission of the Urban League is to create an upward mobility for people. We do that through a host of programs such as childcare and workforce training," Cornwell said.
In addition to childcare and workforce training, the Urban League also offers a “Lend a Hand” program in which they assist residents with their first and last month’s rent, security deposit and assistance with electricity bills. Additionally, there are experts in place that offer English classes, G.E.D certifications, and services for those with disabilities.
The Broome County Urban League has been serving the community for over 40 years and plans to continue their work. If you have any questions or need any assistance, you can reach the Urban League at 607-723-7303 or check them out on Facebook “Broome County Urban League”.
