15-year-old dies from gunshot wound, 17-year-old arrested

On Sunday, officers responded to the Belmont Apartments on E 23rd in reference to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victim, Britney Urenas, 15, was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Some witnesses remained at the apartment while others fled the scene. The evidence indicated that the shooting was not self-inflicted. On Tuesday, Jose Joel Zamarippa, 17, was arrested by Homicide and Warrants detectives for the murder of Urenas. Witnesses at the scene said Zamarippa and Urenas were playing with a gun and Zamarippa pointed it at Urenas and pulled the trigger, killing Urenas. He has been charged with first degree murder.
