(Binghamton N.Y) A local entrepreneur is taking the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to the next level. La’Rue Simmons opened his own thrift store “Stellar Human” on Binghamton’s eastside. Simmons said the inspiration for the name came from his personal journey to sobriety. “The true meaning for me behind Stellar Human is when you think of the word “Stellar” you think of perfection, but we know that perfection is kind of unobtainable," Simmons said. "However, always wanting to be better is not. We can always be better today than we were yesterday."
Although Stellar Human can be classified as a thrift store, it is also a creative space. When you step inside, there is an undeniable energy of culture and comfort. Here, a greeting and a smile is accompanied with the smooth sounds of Jazz music and the scent of burning incense. Walking around the store, you will notice couches for lounging as well as a variety of books and magazines for customer enjoyment. Furthermore, the walls of Stellar Human are adorned with original paintings, handcrafted by local artists. Simmons said local artwork is a huge part of the Stellar Human experience. “We had our first art show earlier this month and I plan on doing one every month showcasing a new artist," Simmons said. "Their pieces will stay up for the remainder of the month.” In addition to artwork, there are games, horticulture, and even tables for students to get some work done, as Simmons is more than happy to share his WiFi with the community. “I wanted to create a space that I would want to shop at," Simmons said, "That I would like to hang out at. I genuinely want it to be a safe space for all." Simmons said his space is the first of it’s kind in the area, and he plans on expanding it further by hosting open mic nights and concerts in the future. He said he also plans on turning the other half of the space into a full-on art exhibit, as well as partnering with his wife to open a smoothie stand within the store. Clothing prices range from $8 up to $100 on certain vintage pieces. Stellar Human is located on 128 Robinson Street Binghamton, NY. Store hours are Tuesday-Saturday noon- 8 p.m. You can follow Simmons on Instagram at @thestellarhuman or visit his website www.thestellarhuman.com, where Simmons plans to offer online clothing sales in the future.
