(TULSA, Okla.) On Monday, Tulsa Mayor Bynum recognized two Tulsa Parks lifeguards with CityStar awards for their life-saving efforts during an incident at McClure Park.

On June 19, 2022, Tulsa Parks employees James “Gus” Rolston and Julianna Pope assisted in saving the life of an unresponsive Parks patron at McClure Park. Using extensive knowledge of CPR, rescue breathing – and knowledge of how an automated external defibrillator works – Gus and Julianna were able to improve the patient’s condition until emergency crews could arrive and render additional medical aid.

“I say this all the time, but we really do have heroes who work at the City of Tulsa,” Mayor Bynum said. “If it weren’t for the quick action of these incredible employees, we very well could have had a much-worse situation. I would just ask Tulsans that if you see our City employees and first responders out and about, please give them a huge thank you for their service.”

CityStar awards are given to City employees who exemplify a commitment to safety in the workplace. The City of Tulsa is proud of these employees and the many others who go above and beyond to improve workplace and citizen safety.
