(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) Two Grand Rapids Police Department Officers (GRPD) are on critical incident leave while the Michigan State police investigate an officer involved shooting that took place early Thursday morning.

Thursday afternoon, GRPD chief Eric Winstrom released clips of body camera video from the incident during a Thursday afternoon press conference.

“I am committed to transparency and that includes releasing video of critical incidents as soon as possible without impacting ongoing investigations,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “The video is a compilation of clips in GRPD’s possession to provide the context and circumstances of the use of force.”

According to GRPD the officers were called to Forrester Street SE for reports of a person breaking into cars around 1:45 am.

When officers got there, the suspect fled and then turned and pointed a gun at the officers.

GRPD says both officers fired their weapons and the suspect was hit multiple times.

The suspect is expected to survive the injuries.

It is GRPD policy for MSP to investigate any officer involved shootings.

GRPD says the full video will be released to the public at a later date, however Winstrom wanted to make video clips of the incident available to the public as soon as possible.

Anyone who has any information is asked to call the Michigan State Police at 616-866-6660 or the Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
