Student loan forgiveness blocked by federal judge
(NATIONAL) College graduates hoping for some student loan forgiveness will have to wait and see if it becomes a reality following a ruling earlier last week.
On Thursday, a federal judge in Texas blocked the Biden Administration's student debt relief plan.
A message on the student aid website says, "Courts have issued orders blocking our student debt relief program. As a result, at this time, we are not accepting applications. We are seeking to overturn those orders."
In the ruling blocking the student loan forgiveness program, U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman stated, "In this country we are not ruled by an all-powerful executive with a pen and a phone. Instead, we are ruled by a constitution that provides for three distinct and independent branches of government."
Earlier this year Biden administration announced individuals earning $125,000 or less per year and couples earning $250,000 or less per year were eligible for $10,000 in student loan forgiveness.
People who received Pell Grants would be eligible for up to $20,000 in student debt forgiveness under the plan.
For people who have already applied for the forgiveness, their applications will be put on hold.
The full 26-page ruling can be found online.
