(NATIONAL) Student loan borrowers in the United States will have to start paying back their loans in October.

On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Biden's student loan relief plan is unconstitutional.

The ruling was 6 to 3 with Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice's Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barret, and Samuel Alito striking down the plan.

The plan would have forgiven up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 for individuals earning less than $125,000 per year or less $250,000 per year for couples who filed their taxes jointly.

The majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts stated, "It would be odd to think that separation of powers concerns evaporate simply because the Government is providing monetary benefits rather than imposing obligations."

Justice Elena Kagan, wrote a dissenting opinion stating, "The result here is that the court substitutes itself for Congress and the Executive Branch in making National Policy about student loan forgiveness."

The full opinion of the court can for this case be found online.
