Stellar Human celebrates three-year milestone

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) In 2021, Binghamton’s fashion scene was transformed when La’Rue Simmons opened Stellar Human, a thrift store dedicated to taking upcycling to the next level. At the time, Simmons told VNN Stellar Human was more than just a thrift store; it was also a space for creatives. 

As Stellar Human celebrates its three-year anniversary, Simmons’s statement rings true. The establishment opens its doors to a diverse community, from people who come to simply hang out to holding public showcases. Simmons even styles local fashionistas, putting together unique looks only he can thanks to his distinctive taste and vintage pieces.  

“I tell people that the shop is the culmination of my two biggest passions, which are fashion and music,” Simmons said. “Music is a part of the environment. Having the right music on can make it or break it”.

Stellar Human holds “Stellar Records” every Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m. for people to unwind, listen to some vinyl and enjoy board games. 

Stellar Human also thrives in the social media department, keeping their 5,000+ followers engaged with unique and fun reels displaying the clothing that is sold at the shop. 

Simmons tells VNN social media has played a huge part in the growth of Stellar Human over the years.

“Before I even opened the store, I was telling people to follow the shop’s Instagram because I knew what we were building was worthwhile,” Simmons said. “I’ve gotten pretty good at creating content which I think has helped keep people engaged in the page.“ .

As far as the future of Stellar Human, Simmons said his next milestone will be the launch of a Stellar Human clothing brand.

“I just have this feeling in my heart and in my soul that it’s going to be something special,” Simmons said. “But I don’t want to rush it. So for now we are going to stick with curating the best vintage and secondhand pieces we can find.”
