(TULSA, Okla.) Pregnant women and families with young infants are invited to attend Tulsa Health Department’s fifth annual Community Baby Shower on September 21 at Booker T. Washington High School, 1514 East Zion Street, Tulsa, OK 74106. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with local vendors ranging from health resources to child care providers, learn about their health, the health of their babies and how to create a safe home environment for the whole family. “This year we are adding targeted safe sleep education and fatherhood education,” said Marnie Jackson, maternal child outreach community development specialist, Tulsa Health Department.  “In Tulsa County, nearly one in four infant deaths are linked to an unsafe sleep environment, and we want to connect with as many parents and caregivers as we can to show them how a safe sleep environment can protect their infant.” This free come and go event is from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Additionally, 200 goodie bags will be given away to new moms as well as grand prizes such as pack n’ plays, a car seat, a stroller and infant rockers. “Last year, more than 10,000 diapers were gifted to moms in need,” said Jackson. “This year, we are on track to give away more than 15,000 diapers.” Donations are still needed to help as many moms as possible. Event planners are asking for community partners and individuals to consider donating items off the shower’s wish list such as diapers or wipes. There are also sponsorship opportunities for businesses, organizations, churches or schools. The wish list itself can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/baby-reg/communitybabyshower-2019-september-2019-tulsa/2PW3VOWS5D5WV “The truth is that many of these moms will never get their own baby shower,” said Jackson. “We open this event up to the community so that all moms have a place to go to celebrate their new baby, have some food and cake, walk away with baby items and learn a little bit about being a new mom along the way.” Registration to attend the shower is not required. This event is presented by Tulsa Health Department, Tulsa Health Department’s Healthy Start and Community Service Council’s Healthy Start and sponsored by George Kaiser Family Foundation, Pregnancy Assistance Fund and Tyler Lockett Foundation.
