(BINGHAMTON, NY) There is a new Facebook group that seems to be taking over the entire 607 area. “Support Black Businesses 607” was created by Sulaiminah Burns amidst the many protests surrounding the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many others who have lost their lives due to racism. In just a short period of time SBB607 has already reached well over two thousand diverse group members. Members can refer to the group when looking for anything black owned, from sandwiches to landscaping services! Anything purchased from a black business is considered a “WIN”. Burns admits running the page can grow a little overwhelming at times, but even more overwhelmed are the businesses that have seen a huge increase in sales since the creation of the group! A local bodega owner says so many people have been coming in ordering sandwiches that they have had to order twice as much bread and deli meat than in the past. Through the success of SBB607, it’s clear that it’s more than just a Facebook group. It is a movement of empowering a historically oppressed group of people. Burns hopes that this movement will eventually spread nationwide to help generate wealth in the black community. "A huge part of the fight for racial justice and equality is economic. This group helps to address that." she adds. Based on all the “WINS” posted by the members, black businesses in the 607 area have a ton to offer. To start gaining some WINS of your own, simply type “support black businesses 607” into your Facebook search bar and let the winning begin!
