GRPS students to participate in Canoemobile on the Grand River
(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) 1,000 Grand Rapids Public Schools students will have the opportunity to enjoy the Grand River next week during school hours.
The students will have the opportunity to participate in Canoemobile, an activity that involves paddling 9-passenger canoes.
Canoemobile will take place at Riverside park from May 15th to May 19th.
Students will also learn about water quality testing, receive cultural history lessons, and hike in nature.
The event is being brought to GRPS students by a non-profit called Wilderness Inquiry that travels the country to bring hands-on water based learning opportunities to students in urban areas.
“This annual tradition is a wonderful experience for our scholars to get out of the classroom and explore!” said GRPS Superintendent Leadriane Roby, Ph.D. “Some of our children haven't yet had the opportunity to enjoy our treasured lakes and rivers. Canoemobile lets our scholars see firsthand the role the Grand River plays in what it means to be a part of the Grand Rapids community.”
The GR Outside Division and other community partners are also helping to make this event possible for GRPS students.
