Local dispensary pays tribute to icon with new merchandise launch
(Binghamton, N.Y.) Just Breathe, Upstate New York’s first legal dispensary, recently launched their first line of street wear merchandise, which includes t-shirts and tote bags.
Olivia Cornwell, social media manager and event coordinator at Just Breathe, said their design was originally inspired by the connotations of Binghamton; The Twilight Zone and Spiedie Fest being the first to come to mind.
“We at Just Breathe really pride ourselves on our connection to the community and a love for Binghamton," Cornwell said. "That's why we wanted to work with a local artist to really celebrate Binghamton’s rich history and Rod Serling's legacy while also ushering in a new history of cannabis and street wear."
Rod Serling, whose hometown was Binghamton, is an American television producer and onscreen host best known for his groundbreaking television series, The Twilight Zone, which aired throughout the early 60’s.
Born on Christmas Day in 1924, 2024 will mark what would have been Serling’s 100th birthday.
The two local talents chosen to bring the Just Breathe design to life are Sha-King of Spiffy Life Clothing and She Shakur of She Artsy (custom artwork).
Shakur played a key role in the t-shirt design, and said it means the world to her to simply be able to contribute to a Black-owned business.
“As a creative, it’s an overwhelmingly beautiful feeling to be able to tap into the legend and creative that is Rod Serling," Shakur said. "He was a mastermind who made Binghamton a magical place, and further assisted our home to set itself apart. I just love the history of it all, and I’m proud to have been selected to express a little Binghamton pride and to go alongside a new chapter of Just Breathe."
Just Breathe’s merchandise launch isn’t the only celebration for Serling’s big upcoming birthday.
Visit Binghamton is also planning to honor the iconic television star. Judi Hess, Visit Binghamton director, said they plan to bring long lasting tributes to the area such as a Rod Serling statue, an interactive museum, and an inaugural Serling festival.
For now, you can visit Just Breathe online or their physical location on 75 Court Street, Downtown Binghamton to purchase your Twilight Zone-inspired merchandise. Must be 21 to enter.
