On May 10th, 2019 around 6:30pm, officers were dispatched to an active shooter in the area of 4800 S. Peoria Ave. The suspect, 25-year-old Derrec Shaw, left his residence earlier in the evening acting erratic and strange. Shaw went to the CiCi’s Pizza, 4800 S. Peoria, and pointed a gun at a guy driving a black car. The first victim walked out of the CiCi’s to make a phone call and Shaw turned and fired at him three times, striking the victim once on the shoulder. Shaw continued south and walked into the China Wok. Video shows him erratic, throwing his hands and gun around spastically, and then hiding in the foyer area. When the second victim opened the door, Shaw fired once, hitting him just below his lower lip. Shaw then fled that scene and ran to a nearby hotel, where he pointed the gun at the clerk and paced around in the lobby area before leaving. As the initial Officer arrived, Shaw ran across Skelly and up onto I-44. Arriving Officers were made aware of the active shooter status by this point and Officers followed Shaw up the embankment. Multiple witnesses stated Shaw was firing at cars as he was in the middle of traffic. The initial responding officer used his patrol rifle and fired twice, killing Shaw.
