(NATIONAL) A virtual hearing called “Disinformation Nation: Social Media’s Role in Promoting Extremism and Disinformation” was held Thursday at 11 a.m. CT/ 12 p.m. ET.   Topics of discussion included the spread and consequences of misinformation and extremist content, and social media platform response.   “The consequences of disinformation and extremist content on these platforms are apparent,” lawmakers stated in the hearing memorandum. “Many experts agree that disinformation about COVID-19 has greatly intensified an already deadly public health crisis. Experts also acknowledge that misinformation about the 2020 presidential election and extremist content has further divided the nation and provoked an insurrection.”   Social media’s top CEOs were invited to testify at the hearing.     You can find the links to the written testimonies of Facebook Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey here:  All condemned the attacks on the Capital in January, provided steps they are taking to combat misinformation and extremist content, and spoke of their positive global impacts. The hearing was a joint effort between the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology and the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce.     You can watch the livestream here:
