(TULSA, Okla.) The River Flood 2019 emergency pet shelter located at the Tulsa Fairgrounds is scheduled to close at the end of the day, Wednesday, June 5. All pet owners were contacted on Monday, June 3, to notify them of the closure schedule and to learn of their plans to reclaim their animals. At noon on Monday, June 3, the emergency pet shelter was holding 70 dogs and 37 cats, one bird and one hamster. The emergency shelter is open with the assistance of Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW), the Humane Society of Tulsa and the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps. The shelter will have been open for two weeks and had a top census of 198 pets. All pets remaining at the shelter when it closes will be transferred for care and housing to the Humane Society of Tulsa (HST). HST will continue to work with pet owners to reunite them with their pets.  Any pet owner who has a pet at the emergency shelter and has not been contacted should call Humane Society of Tulsa at (918) 978-7387. Tulsa Animal Welfare will be extending the hold time for stray animals to 14 days. This will give owners in the Arkansas River corridor extra time to reclaim their pets. All citizens who have lost a pet in the Tulsa city limits are encouraged to check at Tulsa Animal Welfare as soon as possible. Tulsa Animal Welfare also will extend shelter hours this week to give owners who were displaced an opportunity to view the animals and to retrieve their pet if it is there. TAW at 3031 N. Erie Ave. will be open until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday this week, June 3-8. Pet owners also can check online at www.TulsaAnimalWelfare.org by clicking on Lost Dogs and Lost Cats. Animals not reclaimed after the extended hold period will become property of the City of Tulsa and could be made available for adoption.
