(TULSA, Okla.) There have been more than three dozen fatal wrecks on Oklahoma highways since May 28, killing 41 people. Three of those wrecks happened on Friday.
VNN went through the reports to find out what the main cause of these wrecks has been.
16 out of the 40 wrecks were due to one of the drivers driving off the road, 8 of which involved the driver then overcorrecting.
5 out of the 40 wrecks listed speed as at least one of the factors that caused the crash.
4 out of the 40 wrecks listed crossing over the center median or into another lane as the cause.
1 out of the 40 wrecks cited DUI/drugs as the official cause.
12 out of the 40 wrecks are still under investigation.
A dozen wrecks across the state within the last 30 days have involved pedestrians, 5 of which have been fatal.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Hampton said the number of fatality wrecks in the last 30 days is on par to what the state experienced last year.
“The majority of our causation for running off the road is inattentive driving (electronic devices and distraction),” Hampton said. “And impaired driving.”
As for the pedestrian deaths, Hampton said pedestrians need to walk against traffic, which is state law, as well as wear bright clothing if possible and walk as far off the roadway as possible.
